I have seen Guro Ray Dionaldo, Tuhon Jimmie Sayoc, Guro Adreas Badian, all do double whip work, at a very fast pace! If you are fighting with the whip, do not neglect your handle for close in work. The Sayoc whip has a handle of about 12 inches, made of wood. It can inflict a good close quarter shot to your opponent. Also beware if and when your opponent begins to time your shots as he will then quickly enter and start the pounding on you. Guro Crafty has some vidoe footage of Whip vs stick on one of the DogBrothers videos. Check it out, when you have a chance. I think) and short whips (about 6 ft.). The guy with the stick was able to time his advance between cracks of the whip, so once he was inside it was no contest. Maybe in this case it was someone very good with the stick vs. someone not as good with the whip. I don't remember who was involved, but the video make the whip seem one-dimensional and not much of a challenge for the fighter with the stick. >Message: 2 >Date: Mon, 03 Nov 2003 11:25:48 -0500 >From: Khalkee@netscape.net >To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >Subject: [Eskrima] Whips >Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > >I understand that the 6 foot whip can be brought back to target faster than >whips of longer length. Mitch, Joe, others? I would greatly appreciate your stories on any training or accounts with tasers or stun guns. An Internet friend of mine videotapes for SWAT in Northern California and offered these observations. I am thinking about trying this myself sometime and would like to hear more about it. Also, would any of you have any ideas for taser defense, as in what are the properties of the weapon? I've never used one, so I have no idea how fast it can reach a target. Thank you for any information. --------------------------- notes from my friend Mike Last Friday, I was covering a live-fire SWAT building entry where they throw a flash-bang, enter and then fire their automatic weapons at targets. The flash-bang kicked up a piece of gravel and it dinged my very very nice B&W UV filter. Big ding. Kicked up, hell. It FIRED that sucker at me. Along with a number of other members of the gravel family. Good thing I too was wearing my UV filter. The wildest footage was where one of the team members volunteered to get shot with a Taser. OUCH! It dropped him in a heartbeat. Left welts on his back like a Bee sting. --------------- Oh yes. I had to chip in $5 (he made $100 for 5 seconds of agony) to fill up the pot. The guy that paid $20 got to shoot the Taser. ------------ He was up on his knees immediately. I'd say he was navigating somewhat normally in about 5 minutes but the effects could still be seen in his body language for some time. His pay rate was $1200 an hour for that 5 second shock (we all chipped in $105 for him). Not enough I'd say. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "steve kohn" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 03:03:05 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Whip Fighting/Ryan Meyering Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I believe it was Tom Meadows in the video you are referencing. Tom is extremely skilled with a whip and quite accurate. However, it isnt very difficult to time a stick entry in such a situation. Tom teaches to use a dagger in the rear hand for backup when the crash occurs. Gotta start by asking for the make and model of the Taser. I haven't had the privelage of being hit with any of the high end "Law Enforcement Only" models but I'll share my experience and thoughts with their (lesser?) cousins. Tasers are sold as non-lethal. There's a limit to what you can do and not push the boundaries of lethal. My friends and I (and my wife who is only 5'1", a tad over 100lbs) view stunguns as a party game. We pass them around to zap ourselves and sneak up on other people. They'll make you jump but hardly incapacitating. The record for the bigest stun gun we could buy was 2.5 minutes of constant on and the guy could still hold his gun hand steady. We started theorizing that perhaps you just need a more sensitive area. Zapping your tounge quickly became a party favorite. One of the guys took $20 to take a shot to his naked nads. He didn't enjoy it but it didn't drop him either. So we started thinking maybe its just the subdermal aspect of the Law Enforcement model. Out comes the soldering iron and we solder a pin to each probe on one of our stun guns (the big one). Someone volunteers and we stab him in the thigh and turn on the juice. He only volunteered for a 10 second burst but afterward claimed the pins stabbing in hurt worse than the actual tasering. If I could do it for free (or at least cheap) I'd love to take a hit of something that is police issue. Anything that even looks close on the net is cost prohibitive just to try it out. I'd trust my safety to a fogger full of OC/CN before any zap gun. -Steve --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
